Cleft Palate

Cleft palate is a disease caused by the defect of the baby’s facial region due to various reasons during the development of the baby in the mother’s womb. Causes and embryological differences are different from cleft lip. The cleft palate can only be partial in the soft palate, or in the form of a full cleft containing the entire soft and hard palate.
Cleft palate can be seen alone or with cleft lip.

What should be done for cleft patients?

Babies with soft palate lack cannot perform the soft palate while feeding, and the palate muscles cannot perform normal sucking because they do not work. For this reason they need to be fed with special bottles and the feeding position is changed. Babies should be fed at a 45-degree angle with their head upwards and the hole at the end of their bottle should be enlarged. Feeding time should be kept long since they will get tired while feeding according to other babies. It is recommended to use the concentrated formula to increase the weight gain of the baby. Hearing tests of babies born with cleft palate and language tests are very important. The speeches of babies with slits are damaged. It is done at the time of surgery and after the speech therapy is done, the child can talk close to normal. If these steps are disrupted, the child’s speech will be impaired.

When the surgery should be done for cleft lip babies ?

Lip cleft surgery (rabbit lip surgery) should preferably be performed within the first 3 months. Cleft palate surgery is performed according to the degree of cleft in 9-18 month period. If performed early, the maxillary and facial development due to surgery may be adversely affected. If it is operated later, the child learns to speak with the cleft palate and after the palate is repaired, the speech becomes harder to correct. After a cleft palate operation, speech problems may continue due to insufficient functioning of the palate muscles in some of the patients. These patients should be evaluated by the speech therapist at the age of 3-4 years. Early diagnosis and treatment increases the chance of normal speech
Depending on geographical regions and societies, there is a cleft lip and palate every 500-1000 live births.
Cleft lip and palate is more common in girls more than in the boys according to the researches.
