How to Diagnose Oral Cancer

If there is a long-lasting wound in the mouth, tongue and lips;
  • the wound has been present for over 3 weeks
  • long-term use of alcohol and tobacco
  • oral cancer history in the family
These symptoms increase the suspicion of oral cancer and biopsies are taken from the area for definitive diagnosis.
Oral cancer is most common by men over 45 years of age.

Treatment of Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is one of the fastest spreading cancers, as the oral tissues move very quickly. So early diagnosis is vital. Screening tests are performed as soon as the diagnosis is made.
It should be determined whether there is spread to another area. Spread usually occurs first in lymph nodes in the neck. Subsequent spreading can be observed to the lung, brain and liver.
First of all, it is necessary to rapidly remove the cancerous area. Due to the functional characteristic of this area, it is necessary to transplant tissue from either that area or from areas farther away by microsurgical methods.
If there is spread or this is suspected, the lymph nodes in the neck region should also be removed.
Chemotherapy or radiotherapy should then be administered according to tumor size and extent of spread.
If cancer is diagnosed late, cancer may spread, and the entire cancerous area may be removed, which can greatly reduce the patient’s quality of life and functions.
The patient should be careful in routine checks after surgery.
The use of alcohol and tobacco products should definitely stop to avoid recurrence of cancer.
Oral cancer mortality rate is reduced with early diagnosis and successful treatment.
The chance of survival after oral cancer treatment depends on early diagnosis, success of treatment, and compliance with doctor’s recommendations after treatment.
